Item Description
Lot of 12 pieces. c. 1940s and very similar in concept to what would become Topps Magic Photo series issued in 1949. First is 8x13" bw glossy stat featuring concept art for a store sign promoting the card series. Text includes "One Packed in Every Package Of.../50 Different Cards In The Series." Concept is described as "Moisten And Rub The Blank Side Of Card And Presto-Your Answer Appears As If Magic." First example card shown on the sign is of NY Yankees HOF player Lou Gehrig. Reverse has inked notations. Vertical center fold and scattered handling wear. Fine. Next are six prototype cards w/original art fronts in pencil w/watercolor shading and inked text, backs have text in orange pencil plus lead pencil numbers of F1 to F6. Card subjects are: Al Jolson, Annie Oakley, Madame Pompadour, Juliet Capulet, Natural Bridge Virginia, football referee "Illegal Crossing Of Scrimmage Line." Backs have text relating to front image and subset names of "Famous Americans, Sports, Movie And TV, Famous Beauties, Shakespeare, Geography." Originally each card had a hand-done penciled text cover sheet w/directions attached to the front. These have come loose, five are included in the lot. All cards/sheets have lt. aging. Exc.
