Item Description
24x33.25" beautifully crafted custom frame holds artboard w/India ink original art by "Dick Tracy" creator Chester Gould (1900-1985) for Aug. 17, 1947 Sunday page and features 13 panels. Story deals w/the villain Coffyhead and his cohort Lugi escaping their apartment as Dick Tracy and police arrive, removing two Crime Stoppers "bodies" thought to have been killed by gas. As the bodies are loaded into the back of the ambulance, it's revealed the "victims" are Junior Tracy and Bronko, who sit up, very much alive. They reveal Coffyhead's habit of drinking horrible smelling coffee while "Taking His Dope." Tracy spots a clue that leads him to the Zabu Importing Co. in last panel. Dick Tracy clearly seen in six panels, Junior Tracy and Bronko in two and Coffyhead and Lugi in five. Like most "Dick Tracy" Sunday pages, each panel has been cut from another artboard and pasted in place, w/some panels slightly extended. Large "Dick Tracy" title stat paste-over has had all but first block letter interiors removed. Third and last panels have paste-over strips w/new text (as published). Eleventh panel has "The Chicago Tribune" copyright strip. Artboard has some scattered aging but art remains clean and Exc. Art is further enhanced by great frame created by artist Dan Makara, featuring collage style utilizing various newspaper "Dick Tracy" comic strip images from the 1940s, including large color portraits of the main characters obtained from "Dick Tracy" wallpaper of the era. Great piece of "Dick Tracy" original art by his creator. Dan Makara Collection.
