Item Description
11x17" artboard has pen and ink original art for cover of "Fantastic Four" #289, published by Marvel April 1986. Art is by legendary comic artist John Byrne, known for his long runs on Marvel Comics' "X-Men" and "Fantastic Four," among other accolades. Cover features Human Torch standing amid wreckage at center, in Flame On mode, his teammates - Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman and She-Hulk (who was substituting for The Thing) - scattered unconscious at his feet. Johnny reacts w/shock, word balloons reading "It Can't Be... Not You?!" This was in response to the issue's villains; Blastaar and Annihilus. Top margin has half sheet acetate overlay attached w/masking tape. Overlay has publishing indicia (along w/issue number/month) and title paste-overs as well as partial outline of Human Torch's flame. This is noted along right margin's editorial note, which reads "Flame Prints Over Logo, Drop Out Red Holding Lines" w/"Remove Red Lines" noted on acetate. Additional editorial notes along bottom margin. Art has been signed by Byrne at lower left as well as issue writer Jim Shooter at lower right margin. Inked title/issue number at bottom. Staple holes at top left and center w/staple at bottom right. Printing labels along margins have aged due to adhesive and artboard has some scattered aging/handling wear along margins. Back has some additional editorial notes and a few small paint marks. Art remains clean and Exc. This piece was purchased directly from Byrne many years ago and remained in that same collection until now. The opening bid on this item is correct. The consignor is confident collector interest will reveal the true market value of this stunning piece, so feel free to bid early and often!
