Item Description
The "Superman" Sunday page debuted Nov. 5, 1939. Offered here is the complete 16-page 11.5x15.5" Sunday "Comic Section" from the May 31, 1942 edition of New York's "Sunday Mirror" newspaper. Back cover features full page "Superman" Sunday page #135 which differs greatly from origin strip 1A, featuring a new, more comprehensive origin story for Superman, showing Superman as a baby in an orphanage, as a young Superboy (for the first time and not seen again until the first Superboy story was published in "More Fun Comics" #101) as well as four variations on the classic Superman powers list, noting he was able to - "Outrace The Fastest Streamline Train! Hurtle The Highest Skyscraper... Crush Steel In His Bare Hands... And Lift Any Weight!" showing him lifting a large truck. Second to last panel shows Superman using his X-Ray Vision as well as noting his Telescopic and Microscopic Vision. Last panel features classic image of Superman breaking chains, w/text noting "And Now - Superman Lends His Vast Powers To America's War Effort!" as from this point until Dec. 1945, all Superman comic strips were war-related. First panel has McClure Newspaper Syndicate copyright. Comics section also features titles including - "Joe Palooka, Toonerville Folks, Li'l Abner" and others and features a series of "Lucky Bucks Play Money" featuring different comic characters (including Tarzan, Li'l Abner, Joe Palooka and others) meant to be cut out along bottom of pages. Newsprint shows margin aging w/some corner tip wear, but still clean and Fine/VF overall. Historic Superman Sunday page and rarely found as a complete section.
