Item Description
Original 8x10" glossy showing the team in uniforms and posed on a ball field, all looking to the right. Directly behind them is scoreboard reading "Read The Philadelphia Tribune/Hilldale." Hilldale was a charter member of the Eastern Colored League in 1923. Hilldale joined the American Negro League in 1929 but that league lasted only one season. Standing at the front of the row is HOFer Dihigo. He has signed his last name in ink vertically on his body. He has also added in his hand the names of the several teammates including: (Eggie) Dallard, Judy Johnson, (Crush) Holloway, (George) Britt, (Neck) Stanley. While these names are bold, Dihigo has also written on the bottom margin very faint and barely legible, "Philadelphia, 20 de Abril, 1929." The photo has significant damage along the right. This includes heavy emulsion wear down to the surface paper and some small missing pieces from edge/corner tips. Unfortunately HOFer Oscar Charleston stands at the end of the row and only a portion of his face remains but enough distinct details remain to identify him. The manager at right is also obscured by emulsion loss. All other player faces are sharp and distinct. This includes those annotated by Dihigo as previously noted including HOFer Judy Johnson while others include Red Ryan, Phil Cockrell, Bob Hudspeth, Dick Jackson, Joe Lewis and Joe Strong. Other wear includes a heavy crease running diagonally from top left to bottom center but just missing the Dihigo image. At the start of this crease is a 1" tear w/clear tape repair on reverse and small .25" missing piece. There are 16 scattered tiny insect holes. Despite the obvious wear and defects, still a rare photograph and w/the added signature and personalization by Dihigo, a unique item. Comes w/JSA LOA. Personally owned by Martin Dihigo and comes w/COA signed by his son Gilberto Dihigo.
