Item Description

Complete membership kit issued by Swan's Bread in 1941 to promote national defense and the Superman Junior Defense League of America. ©1941 Superman, Inc. Original mailing envelope w/"Swan Superman Junior Defense  League" return address and typed recipient name/address (that matches certificate) has been postally used and has "Jan. 1 - 1942" stamp on back and uneven top margin as opened and is missing half of back flap. Envelope shows some scattered aging/corner tip wear and is VG overall. 5.75x6-7/8" certificate has classic image of Superman breaking chains. This smaller certificate is very different overall from the certificates from other DC Comics kits of the era. Folded once as mailed. Certificate has tiny hole at center left, just above fold line and some minor indents along fold line from pin. Fine. Certificate is very rare, w/only four known example (only one w/its original envelope). 1-1/8" tall die-cut brass pin was awarded for submitting folder complete with stickers to Swan's. While the design is similar to the badges used for bubblegum and milk premiums, on those the flag reads "Superman American." This pin features "Superman Junior Defense League" and is the rarer version. Bright luster, NM. 5.5x7" folder w/application panel, membership card and spaces for placing eight Superman Pledge Stamps acquired from bread cards (see following item #1887). Folder is unused w/no stamps applied. Folder front has some even age toning but o/w folder is Exc. w/perforated piece intact. Complete kits are very rare and this is one of only a few known examples. Franco Toscanini Collection.
