Item Description
Large and impressive 14x18.5" book w/ten stiff paper pages and large fold-out page promotes 1945-1946 Continental Oil Co. promotion. Book opens to two-page spread showing Conoco gas station attendant reaching to shake Superman's hand w/"Shake, Brother!... The Line Forms At The Right Gasoline" text promoting Conoco N-Tane gasoline. Next page features same image of Superman holding sign that reads "The Biggest Outdoor Poster Campaign We Have Ever Released!" and shows him standing over billboard. Next four pages feature bw examples of advertisements that could run in newspapers and magazines (see following lot #2082). Book ends w/large 18.5x27.75" fold-out that shows "Conoco N-Tane For High Octane" billboard advertisement featuring full body image of Superman in flight and carrying Conoco gas pump. This has 8.5" horizontal tear at center as folded w/some green color touch-up to bottom of gas pump image. Archival tape repair to reverse. Book shows even moderate aging and moderate handling wear w/pinch creases to spine and corner tip foxing w/some corner/margin chips/flakes. Horizontal fold at center. VG. Very rare, w/only a few examples known (unlike the posters themselves, of which none are known to have survived). Franco Toscanini Collection.
