Item Description
12x14" double mat contains 6.5x8.5" sheet of rice paper mounted to a slightly larger piece of white board at corners and top/bottom center margins. Sheet bears India ink original art of McCay's famous Sauropod, Gertie. Used in production for the 1914 cartoon "Gertie The Dinosaur," art shows Gertie in profile, w/her head hidden as she drinks from lake. This cartoon is considered to be the first to feature a cartoon character (a character that displays it's own personality). McCay drew each scene by hand on rice paper, including the example offered here. In the 1960s, approximately 400 Gertie drawings were obtained from a business associate of McCay's son. While we have no idea how many Gertie drawings were given away by McCay during his lifetime, we can be fairly certain that there are approximately 400-500 Gertie drawings that survived. Inked centering notations at corners of rice paper w/hand-inked "140" drawing number at lower right. Rice paper has some faint age spotting at lower right and some dust soiling at upper left, but as matted, makes for a very impressive VF display. While Gertie's head is hidden in this image, it remains a truly wonderful example of one of the most important characters from the early days of animation. Jan Wahl Collection.
