Item Description
3.25x5-3/8" postcard, No. 4 in a series of eight cards issued by DC Comics in late 1941. The postcard has typed name and address of Hartford, CT "The Courant" editor and bears Oct. 27, 1941 postmark. Front of postcard features full body image of Wonder Woman. Full text on front reads "Wonder Woman Says 'Today I Want To Introduce The Black Pirate!' - Another Feature In The Eighth Of The 'D.C.-Superman' Monthly Comics!" w/large "Sensation Comics" comic book title logo at bottom. Below mention of The Black Pirate is inset portrait image of the adventure hero, who made his debut in "Action Comics" #23 (April 1940). Back features "Adventure Comics" image w/tiny Starman portrait and "And Adventure Comics Is #4 In The D.C. Superman Group Of Comic Monthlies!" text along w/"No. 4 Of A Series! Watch For Four More!" This references the card series that began w/Wonder Woman on No. 1 and featured Wildcat on No. 2 (which sold in our March 2015 auction for $6,900). All of these cards are extremely rare and we have seen only two others (Wonder Woman and Wildcat, as previously mentioned). Given the extreme rarity of these cards, it is most likely that a complete set of all eight does not exist. Card has been postally issued and as such shows lt. wear from mailing. Even lt. aging, but VF overall. An amazing DC Comics promotional rarity, the only example of this card we've offered in our 49 years.
