Item Description
Large format 14-3/8x19-7/8" thin artboard has original pen and ink art for cover to May, 1965 issue of "Doom Patrol." Cover features great full body image of the gigantic Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man clutching Elasti-Girl one hand, which is a giant flower and Negative Man in the other, which is a tentacle. The Chief is seen in foreground in his robot body, sinking in quicksand. "Menace Of The Turnabout Heroes" story was written by Arnold Drake w/cover art by Bob Brown (1915-1977), who had an extensive career from the early 1940s through the 1970s. Brown co-created the DC Comics hero Space Ranger w/writers Edmond Hamilton and Gardner Fox, drawing the character's complete run from his debut in "Showcase" #15 (Aug. 1958) through "Mystery In Space" #103 (July 1965). Brown also penciled the DC title "Challengers Of The Unknown" from 1959 to 1968. Inks were provided by Bruno Premiani. Handwritten title at top along w/inked printing notations along margins. "The Doom Patrol" title is paste-over (w/creases) as is Comics Code Authority imprint, price and month. 3.5x3.5" area at upper left showing Elasti-Girl in the grip of Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man's flower hand has been cut out and replaced (w/aged tape on reverse) w/altered art, as seen on final cover art. This area also has extensive area of white correctional fluid. Additional white correctional fluid can be seen on Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man's body, specifically on his tentacled portions. Art has a few other scattered spots of white correctional fluid. Some blue pencil preliminary art can also be seen at flower sprouting off of Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man's leg. Artboard has spot of glue staining at lower left, but o/w art is clean and displays VF. Back of artboard has "Comics Magazine Code Authority" inkstamp dated Nov. 24, 1964. Very rare Silver Age "Doom Patrol" cover art, the only such cover art we know of to have come up for auction.
