Item Description
Noted as one of the most famous fantasy artists of the 20th Century, Virgil Finlay produced large quantities of work w/meticulous scratch board techniques, involving black ink applied to white board. Finlay would then scratch away the ink to reveal his images. Providing work for sci-fi pulp "Amazing Stories" and horror/fantasy pulp "Weird Tales," Finlay quickly became a fan-favorite. Offered here is a 6x9-5/8" artboard w/5x8-1/8" image area. Original art depicts sleeping man w/flower-covered woman emerging from stylized bkg. over sleeping man's head. Another man is seen in bkg. w/his hand raised. Small penciled caption below art reads "The Dream Of The Brown Girl In Beads And Flowers Who Could Never Quite Be Reached By The Dreamer For Judgement Night." This art was created as a pulp magazine illustration, c. 1940s. Artboard has staple holes around art and some scattered dust soiling to margins, but this could be matted out. Upper right has 1/8x.5" surface tear that extends very slightly into art area (though only affecting solid black bkg. area). Fine overall, but art still displays Exc. Stunning artwork.
