Item Description
6x8x7.75" tall beautiful figural teapot by Regal China, c. 1951. This is a prototype, w/its design featuring a more classical teapot shape as opposed to the finished piece's (see item #1918) figural design. We assume the final design was chosen as all the pieces in this series featured figural designs, causing this more traditional design to be rejected. Underside has "Walt Disney" copyright etched into the unglazed china surface as opposed to the glazed undersides that the production pieces featured. No "Mad Hatter" name as seen on production piece. Differences include that teapot features relief image of Mad Hatter on teapot exterior as opposed to having teapot formed by Mad Hatter's body. Handle also features teacup design used on production piece, but prototype features relief design on one side of smooth handle as opposed to handle being figural stack of teacups. Spout is plain, w/Mad Hatter's hand on side of teapot instead of forming spout as if tea actually flows from teapot in his hand as seen on production piece. Backside of teapot features relief floral patterns, not utilized on production piece. Backside has .5" hairline at top rim where handle joins teapot, this is as fired. Spout and area below it have a numbered of small scattered lt. purple spots under the glaze. This too is as fired. Teapot is Exc. overall. Most likely a unique piece, this is a truly special Disney item and a must for any "Alice In Wonderland" collector. Originally obtained from an employee of Regal China.
