Collection Detail

Eric Renner is an internationally recognized pinhole photographer who started collecting carnival chalkware prizes 27 years ago. He began to see the figures as representations of stereotypes and archetypes. Subsequently Renner wrote the book “American Disguise,” which describes the evolution of specific cartoon, comic, film and political characters who were transformed into carnival prizes, available from 1910-1960s. Sociologically, the book shows how images of these personalities impacted culture. Renner’s has amassed a collection of 1350 carnival chalkware prizes and his collection is presently for sale. He lives in southwest New Mexico in the Mimbres Valley. With this auction we continue to offer outstanding items from his collection. Many are the actual examples shown in his book.
