Item Description
28.25x31-3/8" high quality wood frame has original art for April 30,1916 Sunday page. 18.5x21.75" thin art board is in center w/22 India ink mostly pantomime panels. Krazy is in all 22 panels, Ignatz is in 17. Dream sequence storyline has Krazy holding a balloon which Ignatz snatches away and floats up in air. Krazy tries to catch him by climbing a giraffe's neck, then gets picked up by a bird who flies above Ignatz and drops Krazy on him. They both fall to earth and Krazy wakes up to discover Ignatz  sleeping nearby on the same log. Krazy kisses him, saying "L'il Dahlink, I'm So Gled It Was Only A Dream". Contented Krazy goes back to sleep dreaming of angelic Ignatz as Ignatz says "I Dreamed An Angel Kissed Me". Last panel has both sleeping together contentedly w/moon peeking over hillside. Last two panels are inscribed in ink by creator " To Mrs. Helen Dirks From Geo Herriman May 1st 1916". Husband Rudolph Dirks created "The Katzenjammer Kids", later known as "The Captain and the Kids" in 1897. Blank margins have been trimmed to borderline edges of art, blank upper tight corner tip is missing .25" piece, and left corner tips are missing tiny pieces. Image area otherwise clean and Exc. A prime example including wonderful Herriman Coconino County ever changing desert landscape. Well drawn and historic example of the classic strip. The earliest Sunday page known to exist.
