Item Description
2-1/8" with metal back and bar pin and name of maker Slater on the curl. Button also has slogan "Support Student Sit-Ins." Red type is just slightly faded. Button has light all over surface wear and a little yellowish tone to the celluloid but still displays extremely clean and with moderate gloss. This rare button was issued shortly after 1960 when King was arrested by Alabama officials on two counts of felony perjury for signing fraudulent tax returns for 1956 and 1958. In response a group of King supporters met in Harry Belafonte's New York apartment to form this group. The group ran an advertisement in the New York Times taking the position that King's arrest was politically motivated and an effort "To Destroy The One Man Who, More Than Any Other, Symbolizes The New Spirit Now Sweeping The South." The ad was signed by 84 supporters including Jackie Robinson and Eleanor Roosevelt. Rare.
