Item Description
1" button with W&H backpaper. Issued by "Chicago Defender Defense Program" with two slogans below "Fight To Save Democracy/Victory With Justice For All." A third slogan reads "Remember Pearl Harbor and Sikeston Too." Also featured is large letter "V" for victory as well as female figure holding scales of justice. This button is from 1942 and references not only Pearl Harbor but also an event in Sikeston, Missouri when on January 20,1942 a black oil mill worker assaulted a white women in her home and nearly killed the first police officer who attempted to arrest him. An angry mob hauled Cleo Wright from jail and gruesomely murdered him. Button is NM and displays Mint. Rare.
