Item Description
13/16” Buffalo nickel with the original image of American Indian on the front altered by carving the metal into what is now a bearded man with hat. The original “1913” date is lightly worn but visible on his shoulder. The Hobo nickel reached its peak during the early 1930s when large numbers of men were on the road looking for work. Some with hours to fill and creative talent would take these coins and turn them into pieces of folk art which could be sold or traded for a meal or shelter. From the Richard Merkin Collection. Comes with Hake’s COA.
