Item Description
All items relate to 1957 Washington “Evening Star” newspaper contest entered by aspiring cartoonists. Jan. 31,1957 daily art is 5.75x17-1/8” w/India ink image area. Howland Owl is talking to Churchy in all four panels about trying to get Pogo to go home so he can do a survey. Pogo can be seen in the distance in panel two relaxing in his boat w/fishing pole. Panel three ©1957 Walt Kelly, and inscribed in blank bottom margin “Best To Donald Sapir”. Usual vertical fold between panels two and three, otherwise Exc. Comes w/two typewritten letters personally signed by Walt Kelly. One has drawing tip “Eight Hours A Day While Learning Is Not Too Much”, the other mentions sending signed copy of book. Letters have light folds as mailed, otherwise Exc. Book is 5x8” first edition “The Pogo Party” ©1956 autographed “For Donald Sapir Walt Kelly” on second inside page. Lt. cover dust soil. VF. Wonderful group all sent to same person.
