Item Description
All date to 1947 when Topps first issued Bazooka bubble gum. Paper ad slick is 9.75x14.25” w/8x11” image area, likely designed for a confectioner’s promo magazine. Ad lists 29 different DC comics including “Superman” and “Batman” where “18,000,000 Kids Read About Bazooka The Atom Bubble Boy”. Bottom portion reprints a comic book ad page w/red headed “Bazooka The Atom Bubble Boy” and gum package. Next is unaddressed government issue postcard thanking potential recipient for requesting “Bazooka Prize Catalog” and cartoon image of differently designed boy wearing beanie apologizing for delay “We Ran Out Of Our First Printing”. Signed “Your Friend Bazooka Joe” w/pencil text at upper right “10/20/47 15,000”, likely noting how many were planned to be mailed. Third item is 5-7/8x6.25” unused decal for store window w/same boy in beanie happily blowing a huge bubble. All items have lt. wear, dust soil, aging. Postcard has yellowed cellophane tape strip across top. Trio overall VG/Fine. We believe the postcard may represent one of the first uses of the character name “Bazooka Joe”. Extremely limited distribution. Interesting group showing a major Topps character in development.
