Complete set of 14 thin artboards measuring 10.75x16" featuring original pen and ink art by comic book artist Jack Sparling for "Star Spangled War Stories" issue #175 published by DC Comics in Nov., 1973. Issue was written by Frank Robbins w/interior art by Sparling. From the 1950s through the 1970s, Sparling provided art for a variety of publishers, including Harvey Comics, Charlton Comics, DC Comics ("Challengers Of The Unknown, Secret Six" and "Eclipso") and Marvel Comics ("Captain America"). Sparling also provided art for "Classics Illustrated," drawing adaptations of Robin Hood and Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court." Story is entitled ""A Slow Burn...From Both Ends" and features the Belgian Resistance fighting against the Nazis. The Unknown Soldier leads a team, called Mission "Scuttle," to capture the essential port of Antwerp, Belgium. They have to destroy the castle defenses so freighters can move into the harbor. However, the Belgian Resistance has plans of their own to blow up the Castle. First two pages feature an impressive double page spread showing Nazi torturing young Belgian woman. The Unknown Soldier, a war comics character w/a bandaged face was created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, first appearing in "Our Army At War" #168 in June, 1966. He appears in 13 panels and in an additional panel in disguise as a Nazi. Typical aging and handling wear, w/scattered editorial corrections/marks at margins. VF overall.
