Item Description
Each is 7/8" and each has back paper of firm "Griffith And Rowland Press" listing a number of cities throughout the United States. These buttons were made prior to the sinking of the Lusitania by German U-boat torpedo on May 7, 1915. The two buttons showing each ship and its name do turn up. However the seven buttons designating rank are exceedingly rare and we believe these are all the first we've seen. For the Lusitania the ranks are "Captain/First Mate/Steward." The first two have a tiny tan age mark on their outer edges. In the Mauretania series the ranks are: Captain/First Mate/Purser/Second Mate/Steward." These are all totally clean and display Mint. Likely used in conjunction with Sunday school attendance and possibly Rally Days.
