Item Description
7.25x10" square bound publication relating to printing and graphic-related material. Vol. 3 #2 contains first printed version of "Narrative Illustration, The Story Of The Comics" by M. C. Gaines. Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide notes this publication in a pamphlet version w/plain cover w/title only and is considered very rare. While this bound publication version is not noted in Overstreet, our research has turned up that final page of the pamphlet contains the following text: "Reprinted From Print, A Quarterly Journal Of The Graphic Arts Vol. 3, #2 Summer, 1942." Based on this finding, we are proud to offer the first printing of M. C. Gaines' publication "Narrative Illustration" as it was first seen in the art community. Gaines mentions early comic book forms and their origins as well as notable artists like Honore Daumeir, Winsor McCay, Rodolphe Topffer, others. Some of the other contents include promotional comic book "The Minuteman Answers The Call" which was included in the Junior Justice Society Club kit premium available from DC Comics. Though not credited, art is by noted Golden Age Hawkman artist Sheldon Moldoff who later went to work at E.C. Comics. Also included is eight-page insert comic "Picture Stories From The Bible #8 'Jonah And The Whale.'" Which is immediately preceded by a full-page ad for this story appearing in the Sunday Herald newspaper. This ad makes this a scarce variant of this publication, as other copies exist without this ad. Cover has corner bumps but retains an Exc. appearance w/Exc. contents. Very low distribution.
