Item Description
13x19.58" thin DC Comics, Inc. artboard has pen and ink (w/some white pencil accents) original art for page 3 of "Sandman" Vol. 2, #3, published March 1989. Art is for "Dream A Little Dream For Me" storyline written by Neil Gaiman and was drawn by Sam Kieth w/inks by Mike Dringenberg. This page features an early appearance by John Constantine, star of DC's "Hellblazer" comic book series. While the second page of this issue features Constantine waking up, this third page features him brushing his teeth at sink, looking closely at his face in the mirror, putting his shoes and trademark trenchcoat on and turning off his clock radio, which is just starting to play "Mr. Sandman" by Vaughn Monroe & His Orchestra, a clever nod to the "Sandman" title character Dream/Morpheus. Last panel shows Constantine emerging onto a rainy London street w/a cigarette in his mouth. This issue features Constantine helping Dream recover a pouch of sand which had served as one of Dream's totems of power. John purchased the pouch during Dream's imprisonment and it had then been stolen from him by an ex-girlfriend. Constantine and Dream find the woman having been driven mad by using the sand as a drug. Dream recovers the pouch, granting the woman a peaceful death at Constantine's request and promising to end the nightmares Constantine had been having. Art has text block paste-overs in first and second panels w/some of Kieth's preliminary blue penciling visible. Scattered white correctional fluid to a few panels and along margins. Faint handwritten "Sandman" title at top along w/issue and page number at top. Reverse has DC Comics copyright stamp. Scattered handling wear w/creases to upper left and some lt. dust soiling. Artboard is Fine/VF overall, but art could easily be framed for an Exc. display. Historic and early John Constantine appearance, outside of his first appearances in "Swamp Thing" and in his own book, "Hellblazer."
