Item Description
Original cardboard box w/illustrated lid contains 12" long tin litho "Super Cycle" that comes w/4.5" tall hard rubber rider figure w/hard vinyl cape. Made in Japan by Bandai, c. 1950s. Though not marked as such, box lid clearly depicts Superman riding this toy, which is marked "B-617" (this number also appears on the box lid) on lid art. Lid's side panels also feature illustrated instructions. Lid has some creases at corners/edges and even lt. aging/dust soiling, but both lid and box bottom remain free of any splits. Fine/VF overall. In addition to "Super Cycle" name on both sides of cycle's rear fin, sides are also decorated w/Superman's "S" shield, w/"Atom" name on sides of fuel tank. Raised compass design on handlebars. Original hard rubber tires. Toy's friction action works and toy produces siren sound as indicated on box lid. Toy has scattered paint nick/scratches and some minor trace oxidation in a few small spots on fenders and tail fin w/more moderate wear to right front fender. Luster loss to metal accent strips along top seam. Rider figure is missing tin litho "S" shield, revealing that figure is generic spaceman design that was customized w/chest attachment and cape (complete w/original tiny nail used to secure it to body) to appear as Superman. This figure has hardened w/age and shows obvious fatigue but still structurally sound. Figure is missing left arm but comes w/professionally recast arm in matching color, making for a perfect match to the original. Fine overall. One a few examples of this rare toy are known, and an example w/its original box such as the one offered here is even rarer. Among the most sought after of all Superman-related toys. Franco Toscanini Collection.
