Item Description
17-1/8x24" thin artboard has pen and ink original art for Nov. 25, 1979 Sunday Page, #38 in the "Princess Leia, Imperial Servant" storyline published Nov. 6 to Dec. 31, 1979 that was written by Archie Goodwin (as Russ Helm) w/art by Russ Manning (1929-1981), a comic book artist who created the series "Magnus, Robot Fighter" and illustrated such newspaper comic strips as "Tarzan" and "Star Wars" in the late 1960s and into the 1970s. The "Star Wars" comic strip ran 1979-1984, making this art from the strip's first year. Strip has eight panels and shows Princess Leia (sporting her iconic hairstyle) listening in on Megonite Workers as they plot a way off Phelarion. Mistaking her for Lady Tarkin's spy, they grab her, causing her to call one of them "Vacuum Head." They plot to kill her until she reveals that they share the same goal - escape. One still doesn't trust her but his compatriot keeps a level head, stating that they have to trust her or be blasted into orbit. Leia appears in all but one panel. Second to last panel has 20th Century-Fox/Black Falcon copyright strip paste-over. Fifth panel has L.A. Times Synd. distributor paste-over strip. "Star Wars" title in first panel is paste-over as well. Artboard has some lt. handling wear/aging to margins, but art remains clean and Exc. Russ Manning "Star Wars" Sunday pages are scarce given his illness and early death shortly into the strip's initial run. They continue to rapidly grow in desirability and value.
