Item Description
In 1940, DC Comics ran a Superman contest promoted in Superman and Action Comics with 1,600 of these rings used as prizes. The ring may also have been used as a give-away with the candy and gum promotions as well. This example is a new discovery bringing our known total in all conditions to 22. The ring base is adjustable silvered brass with a pair of lightning bolts on one side and a planet design on the other. The ring base silvering is very close to 100% complete. The bands are nearly a perfect circle. The ring top has a brass disk with image of Superman breaking a chain. Surrounding text reads “Supermen Of America/Member.” The background of the inscription originally had dark red spray/misted paint and this color is the first thing to wear off of these rings. Unlike most examples with no paint remaining this one does have visible areas of dark red color. Most notably these are to the left and right of the word “Of” and in the area following the word “America.” There are additional tiny traces around the lettering of the word “Supermen.” While the red is only about 25% intact enough remains to make it visible and that sets it apart from most examples of this ring. Our last example with no red paint but otherwise in nice condition exceeded $2,000. With this degree of red paint remaining we would grade the overall piece as Very Good but the silvered brass areas of the ring base remain Exc.
