Item Description
c. 1937. Heavy art board has 17.25x19-7/8” unsigned image area in India ink and gouache with one eyed pirate swinging his cutlass, just missing The Hawk. Bottom “Hawks of the Seas” title logo w/crossed swords is hand inked along w/pirate flag. Separate art board is attached at reverse of top w/applied Photostat “Wags” title incorporating printed comic strip character images including Terry, Dick Tracy, Tarzan, Little Orphan Annie, Moon Mullins. Image area has scattered white-out as done by the artist, center area has tan moisture marks, lower right corner of board is missing 5” diagonal piece extending just a bit into border line area. Title stat has edge wear and aging. Will mat and frame to VG+ appearance. The Hawk was Spirit creator Will Eisner’s first major character. “Wags” was a weekly newsprint tabloid created by Eisner and Jerry Iger for the British and Australian markets which had 88 issues published between Jan. 1 and Nov. 1, 1938. “Hawks Of The Seas” first appeared in April 1937, and this is possibly the very first cover design. “Sheena, Queen Of The Jungle” had her debut in “Wags” in Nov. 1937. Any issues of “Wags” are exceedingly rare; original cover art is virtually non-existent. First we’ve seen in our 47 years. A superb and historical action image.
