Item Description
15.5x21.5" frame contains 11x17" sheet w/original lead pencil art by Wayne Boring, a comic book artist best known for his work on Superman from the late 1940s to the 1960s. Art depicts Clark Kent at a Daily Planet typewriter daydreaming about Superman swimming w/his mermaid girlfriend Lori Lemaris. Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and his wife Joanne can be seen at right w/Siegel holding stack of comic book scripts, Superman's co-creator Joe Shuster can also be seen along w/Wayne Boring, who holds up a sketch of Superman. Art also features Superman supporting cast Perry White and Lois Lane. c. 1985. Art is unsigned but has a ballpoint note on back that reads "Charlie This Is The Grid For Your Office Pic! It's About 60% Done – WB" which shows through slightly onto front. Sheet has red inked grid pattern on front and was mailed w/horizontal fold through center. Strip of clear tape on reverse. Fine appearance. This preliminary art comes w/22.25x26.5" frame that contains the original finished mixed media painting mentioned by Boring. While art is close to the preliminary design, there are some differences. Wayne Boring's position has changed from at left to at right, Perry White and Lois Lane now have more prominent positions. Probably the most noticeable change is how Lori Lemaris is depicted. While the preliminary art clearly shows her as a mermaid (and apparently topless w/bow around nude waist), finished art gives her long human legs and just the appearance of small fins on her feet. Boring has signed at bottom center. Exc.
