Item Description
73" tall overall Zoltan fortune teller on fiberglass pedestal base produced by Prophetron starting in 1967 (w/production continuing into the early 1970s). Fiberglass top case w/glass door front (w/back-painted glass w/large "Zoltan" name) measures 27.5x37x24" deep and contains 19" tall Zoltan bust seated w/glass crystal ball in front of him. Zoltan was a project by Robert B. Bourque and lifelong friend Robert Cottle, who provided the deep voice heard on the machine. When 10¢ was deposited into slot at lower right, selection was made from row of 12 buttons for selecting pre-recorded "fortune." All the buttons are wired in parallel, so pressing any button just starts the tape system, which has 14 different fortunes, all about one minute in length. These were based on user's astrological symbol, a popular interest at the time. When selected, Zoltan's crystal ball would light up, casting an eerie glow upon his face, and glass panels w/zodiac symbols along left/right and at bottom would light as well. The fortune plays and when done, a conductive tape on the tape loop closes a switch, which turns off the tape player. Each zodiac symbol is shown along w/its accompanying symbol and date range. Once selection was made, user picked up telephone receiver at left and listened to message played on an endless loop tape cartridge by Bernard Cousino. Other tapes were produced and could be switched out, including Zoltan in other languages as well as a Christmas version. Originally, case and pedestal were all painted metallic gold. This has since been re-painted in multiple bright colors. Case shows scattered wear, w/some of the original gold paint showing through. Backs of interior velvet curtains are a bit faded from interior lights behind zodiac symbols panels. Working as is, but could use servicing/cleaning for optimal performance. Fine overall. Due to size and/or weight pf this lot, shipping charges may be substantial. Please contact us w/any shipping inquiries prior to close of auction.
