Item Description
14x14" proof of citizenship dated June 19, 1929. Issued by the Cuban Government while he was in the Dominican Republic. All pertinent information has been filled out in ink by a Government official while Oms himself has signed the document on appropriate line at the bottom left. Just to the right of his signature is an attached 1.5x2" photograph which has official embossed seal. The paper sheet has obvious wear and aging including small pieces of paper missing along some fold lines, fold crease intersections and margins. His signature and photo are not affected. Still an incredible signed piece that would display nicely if framed. As is, condition is Good. This is the third and final Oms signed personal artifact in the Merkin collection (previously we offered a passport & work visa that sold for $4,600 and a single passport page that sold for $2,530). Oms was a Cuban center fielder in Negro League baseball and Latin American baseball, most notably with the Cuban Stars (East). Oms played winter ball in the Cuban League from 1922 to 1946. He led the league in batting average three times and won the Cuban League's MVP Award in 1928-29. He ranks second all time for career batting average in the Cuban League (behind Cristobal Torriente) with an average of .345 and he was elected to the Cuban Baseball HOF in 1944. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
