Item Description
3.75x6.75" First Day Cover w/double May 15, 1963 Cape Canaveral, FL. postmarks. While FDC has "Pony Express" paid postage mark, it also features "Project Mercury" stamp. FDC has been signed by all seven of the group of elite military test pilots selected by NASA to operate the experimental Mercury spacecraft and become the first American astronauts. Astronauts include - John Glenn, Donald "Deke" Slayton, Walter "Wally" Schirra, Leroy Gordon Cooper, Jr., Alan B Shepard, Scott Carpenter and Virgil Grissom; and each has signed in either black or blue ink at left. FDC has mailing label for Dr. E.V. Smith, Jr., who obtained these signatures at the time of the space flights. Dr. Smith collected stamps as well as the signatures of the nation's astronauts (see next item #1046). FDC has some lt. even aging and is Exc. A scarce opportunity to obtain all seven of these history-making astronauts' signatures all in one place. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
