Item Description
8.25x11" 48 page program for August 18, 1946 game held at Comiskey Park. This was the second of two East-West games in 1946. The West avenged their loss from three days earlier, beating the East, 4-1. Over 45,000 fans turned out to watch the contest. It was the last East-West Game to feature Josh Gibson. Other players as listed on the unused scorecard of the center spread are: East- Henry Kimbro, Larry Doby, Monte Irvin, Buck Leonard; West- Sam Jethroe, Quincy Trouppe. Coaches listed include Biz Mackey and Frank Duncan. One page has photos of the 1945 All-America team. 12 players shown in uniform includes Josh Gibson, Quincy Trouppe, Buck Leonard, Sam Jethroe. One page has photo of the 1945 World Championship Team Cleveland Buckeyes w/Trouppe. One page has Philadelphia Stars team photo on top half and text tribute to Leon Day on the bottom half. One page has the title "Four Of America's Greats" with full figure images in uniform of Johnny Davis, Dickie Seay, Lennie Pearson, Bill Byrd. Full page photo of Dr. J. B. Martin, President of the Negro American Baseball League. Several additional pages feature text information about the Negro Leagues and/or their presidents and other officers, owners and teams. Most of the remaining pages are advertising for local businesses, many African-American owned & operated, some w/photos of the proprietors. Front cover has 2" tear at top spine edge. Handling wear w/some creases. VG w/clean and VF contents. Historic program for game that featured some of the greatest Negro League stars of all time and future members of the National Baseball HOF.
