Item Description
1.25” with back paper of St. Louis Button Co. and featuring their most attractive eagle, sun burst and flag design. This is among the rarest and most sought after Harding-Coolidge jugates. An undamaged example has sold in excess of $20,000.00 and we know of only two other examples both with significant damage. This is a superb example, near mint and displaying mint. There are no significant defects. The glossy celluloid surface has only slight traces of typical wear. The only mark large enough to see in reflected light is an extremely fine and very shallow hairline scratch from the top of the Coolidge circle going downward, left of his eyes, and ending in the flag design. The button has full gloss and perfect centering. There are no splits and no stain. Back paper has a faint hairline crease and trace of dust. This button comes from a collection which began in the 1930s. This Harding design is unlisted in Hake, but the Cox-Roosevelt matching jugate, in the smaller 7/8” size, carries a Hake 2004 guide value of $28,000.00. We believe this Harding version in the 1.25” size, one of four known to us, and one of only two known to us without condition issues, should approach that value based on its rarity and condition.
