Item Description
Original 5x7" glossy photo c. 1937. This team played against the famous Ciudad Trujillo team that included Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige and Cool Papa Bell. This photo shows 13 team members and batboy all in uniform on a ball field with much baseball equipment in front of them. Stadium seats in the bkg. are filled with spectators. Photographer's ink stamp mark at lower left "New View Foto/Cesareo Nun (last two letters can't be made out) Santiago R.D." Standing at center is Martin Dihigo while kneeling second from the left is Luis Tiant Sr. Tiant's baseball career included stints with Negro League teams: Cuban Stars West and New York Cubans (with whom he won the 1947 Negro League World Series). His son was a baseball star in his own right as a starting pitcher in MLB for nearly 20 years. Not much needs to be said about Dihigo. The fact that he is the only player inducted into the Cuban, Mexican and National Baseball Hall of Fame says it all. The photo has a clear and sharp image and Dihigo stands out at the center of the team. Photo is attached to a sheet of paper but remains totally glossy w/just minor handling wear. VF. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
