Item Description
1-5/8x2-3/8" Cuban card from set distributed in packs of Diaz cigarettes. The cards in this set feature players from the 1923-1924 Cuban Professional League. 85 cards are in the set, the largest and one of the scarcest of all 1920s Cuban card issues. Printed in dark brown w/photo on front along w/team, player name and position "Santa Clara B.B.C. Oms-Outfielder." Card back includes number and description of the series w/offer for an album. Slight margin trim but both sides of card remain clean and image is very bold. Oms was a Cuban center fielder in Negro League baseball and Latin American baseball, most notably with the Cuban Stars (East). Oms played winter ball in the Cuban League from 1922 to 1946. He led the league in batting average three times and won the Cuban League's MVP Award in 1928-29. He ranks second all time for career batting average in the Cuban League (behind Cristobal Torriente) with an average of .345 and he was elected to the Cuban Baseball HOF in 1944.
