Item Description
Large and impressive original glossy photo is 8x34" and comes in wood frame w/mat (but no glass). Printed text at bottom center reads "Opening Game All-Professional Winter League/Joe Pirrone's All Stars vs. Phil. Royal Giants/Los Angeles White Sox Park Oct. 24, 1926." Photographers mark at lower right reads "Weaver LA." The superb, crisp and clear photo features both teams standing on ball field with full packed stands behind them, the crowd even overflowing to surrounding areas and some even hanging from telephones poles. Spectators are a mix of both Caucasian and African American. The Giants team is comprised of 13 players, manager and bat boy. One player wears a "Hilldale" jersey, all others are matching "Giants." The All Stars team is comprised of 16 players, manager and bat boy. At far right is an umpire. This Giants team is comprised of six HOF members: Bullet Joe Rogan, Willie Wells, Biz Mackey, Andy Cooper, Turkey Stearnes and Willie Foster. First two Giants players have their names inked in tiny letters between their legs as well as a few tiny ink marks. Photo was once rolled and as such now has four 5" long vertical ft. crease lines but these mostly blend. Other scattered margin wear w/smaller crease lines, some tack holes and a pair of .5x1" missing margin pieces (top right and bottom left corner) that have been neatly replaced and are mostly hidden by the mat. Three strips of archival tape were used on the top reverse margin to secure the photo to the mat but the photo can be easily removed if desired. Kept as framed for now just to keep the photo flat and secure. Full image remains sharp and photo remains glossy. VG. An stunning panoramic featuring some of the greatest players of the Negro Leagues. One of the highlights of the entire Merkin collection. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
