Item Description
6.75x8.75" glossy original photo showing 18 team members in uniforms/jackets posed on a ball field w/equipment in front of them including a bag marked "Cubans." Has hand inked text at lower right reading "New York Cubans Base Ball Team April 20 - 35 Jacksonville Florida." Each player also has inked number above or below their images corresponding w/list of player names added to the reverse. Photographers mark of "Photo By Weems" partially covered by an inked arrow pointing to #7 "Martinez." The two key players in this photo are Martin Dihigo and Alejandro Oms, others include Lazaro Salazar, Luis Tiant Sr. and Cocaina Garcia. Prior to 1930 there were two different teams for the Cuban Stars, one was East and one was West. Both teams folded around 1930 but owner Alex Pompez created a new Cuban team called The New York Cubans in 1935. The team was composed of Cuban players as well as players from other nationalities including the United States. Top two corners have small missing pieces, scattered handling wear w/lt. creases mostly only visible in reflected light. Photo image remains clean, glossy and sharp. VG. In our Nov. 2011 auction a totally different photo for this same 1935 team sold for $3,889. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
