Item Description
3.5x5.5" matte finish w/choice image of 10 players in uniform along w/man in dapper attire. Printed text on bottom margin is only partially legible but includes the team name. At bottom right is hand inked text by person who mailed the postcard and includes a reference to this team playing "Friday." Reverse used and has postmark of Oct. 1, 1905. In 1905 the X-Giants became the first black team to beat a Major League Baseball team when they took one of two games from the Brooklyn Dodgers. Pictured in front row, second from the right is Grant Johnson. He was one of the greatest Negro League sluggers of the Deadball Era. Along with Bud Fowler, he formed the Page Fence Giants in 1895. Over the next decade, Johnson would play for every one of the powerful early Black teams, including the Columbia Giants, Cuban X-Giants, Philadelphia Giants and Brooklyn Royal Giants. Johnson's lengthy career as a player ended when he finally retired in 1932 at the age of 58. Slight margin trim in no way affecting the image. Lt. aging mostly to reverse, front image is clean and bold. Fine. Historic as we believe this represents the earliest known postcard featuring a Negro League baseball team w/professional level players. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
