Item Description
The song "Just Because She Made Dem Goo-Goo Eyes" was published in 1900 with words by John Queen and music by Hughey Cannon. The song was an instant hit and seems to have inspired at least two pins. Other famous compositions by Cannon are "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey" from 1902 and "Frankie & Johnny" from 1904. Edison recorded John Queen, in black face, performing the song 12/29/1901. In Auction #201 we offered a cardboard version of this mechanical button but this version is all tin litho. The item is 1-7/8" dia. with brass luster reverse and vertical long stickpin. The front of the piece is also in tin and designed as a close-up eye with upper eyebrow and with eyelashes within the cut out eyeball shaped window. Within the window is displayed a blue iris and when a string at the bottom is pulled down a piece of tin covers the iris as if the eye is blinking and on the eyelid are printed the words "Goo Goo." Beautifully constructed and with NM paint. Unusual and rare.
