This 2-1/8” button made by Western Badge with metal back and bar pin is serially numbered “16” for the small number of people invited to visit the famous airship after its touch-down at 5:00 AM on August 26, 1929 for its one-day stay before lift-off August 27th to Lakehurst, NJ on the final leg of its 21 day flight around the world. This was the world’s first passenger-carrying around the world flight. William Randolph Hearst paid thousands of dollars for exclusive story rights for his newspapers. The airship’s luxurious appointments accommodated 22 passengers at the fee of $9,000 for the round trip, many of the voyagers were Hearst employees. The flight officially began August 8, 1929 when the Graf Zeppelin flew past the Statue Of Liberty flying east and piloted by Dr. Hugo Eckener. This button carries facsimile signature that appears to read “Karl L. Langs” although we can’t find any information about this person.
