Item Description
The largest known button from this 1900 era and any era. Metal back has stamp of maker W&H. There are two slots which could hold a wire easel but this gigantic button is actually designed to be worn. There is a metal tab holding a metal ring on the reverse at top and attached to the ring is 1.75” ribbon joined to a large safety pin. This very same item was last sold in a Heritage auction November 17, 2010 and it realized $4,182.50. While a couple examples of this button are known this is the finest known example and it has just the very slightest degree of surface wear in the form of a few widely scattered and very light hairline scratches. The worst of these is a 5/16” hairline on the eyebrow of McKinley at the right. This and the couple of other lesser hairlines show only the slightest bit in reflected light. The piece is in spectacular NM condition and displays Mint with high gloss and flawless color. Heritage called this “A Once-In-A-Lifetime Opportunity To Obtain The Very Best” and we concur.
