Item Description

18x20.5" frame contains original gouache art that has been matted to 9.25x11.75". Art is for the cover of the first issue of "Cripta do Terror," a Brazilian collection of classic EC horror comics that was published in 1991. Comes w/a reading copy of that issue. Art was created by Brazilian artist Carlos Chagas, whose style pays beautiful tribute to the likes of EC greats Jack Davis, Johnny Craig and Al Feldstein. Chagas was born Rio de Janeiro in 1952. He attended the National School of Fine Arts (Escola Nacional de Belas Artes), and also learned a bit seeing the work of other illustrators in their studios. He soon began to illustrate newspaper articles, draw comic strips, magazine covers and books. For two decades he drew the main satires and the covers of "MAD" and "Cracked," among several other humor magazines published in Brazil. Over the years he did a bit of everything, illustrations for major advertising agencies, movie posters, illustrations for model kit boxes and so on. He also made dioramas for museums and did some work for TV. Today he continues painting for private collectors and creating military illustrations, his favorite subject. Art is a representation of all that made EC great. Front and center is a large image of the Crypt Keeper, presenting a blood-filled platter w/a woman's head at its center as The Old Witch and The Vault-Keeper prepare to strike him w/a club that has a nail driven through it and an axe. In the bkg. are several grotesque monsters including a Frankenstein-looking character at back center and several skulls laying at their feet. Large black area at top left devoid of detail to accommodate title. Art displays Exc. Wonderfully detailed EC original art. (L - $2000 to $5000)
