Item Description
Sun Studio is a recording studio opened by rock pioneer Sam Phillips in Memphis, TN., on Jan. 3, 1950. It was originally called Memphis Recording Service, sharing the same building w/the Sun Records label business. Reputedly the first Rock & Roll single, Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats' "Rocket 88" was recorded there in 1951, leading the studio to claim status as the birthplace of Rock & Roll. Sun Records is best known for giving notable musicians such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash their first recording contracts, helping to launch their careers. It was Sun Records producer and engineer, Jack Clement, who discovered and recorded Jerry Lee Lewis. Included here are 5" dia. unused Memphis Recording Service acetate transcription label. c. 1952. NM. Next is 6x7" Memphis Recording Service receipt dated Sept. 10, 1954 for acetate masters recorded by the Blackwood Brothers Quartet. Faint paperclip mark at top center and lt. aging. VF.
