Auction #207 - Part II
Item numbers 1235 through 2949 in auction 207.
10.5x15.75" thin artboard has eight panels of original pen and ink art by legendary comic book artist/illustrator Bernie Wrightson. Art is for the Mar.-April, 1974 issue of "Swamp Thing" #9, page #8 published by DC Comics and comes w/reading copy of the actual comic book. Swamp Thing is a DC Comics character, a muck monster, or humanoid mass of vegetable matter who fights to protect his swamp home, the environment in general, and humanity from various supernatural or terrorist threats. He first appeared in the July, 1971 "House Of Secrets" issue #92 and was created by Len Wein and Wrightson. The character returned in his own series (see Swamp Thing comic books #1706-1707), from which this art comes. Art features Swamp Thing in seven of the eight panels, one full-body image, a close-up of his face and a five-panel sequence showing Swamp Thing regenerating his hand. This page comes from a story written by Len Wein featuring an alien crash-landing and hiding his ship in a cabin Swamp Thing worked out of. Upon meeting, the spacesuit-wearing alien perceives Swamp Thing as a threat and attacks him, blasting his hand apart w/his weapon. This sequence is shown in the art we are offering. Page has slightest trim at top, only slightly affecting written text which includes title and page information. Art areas remain unaffected. Page margins are aged and upper left/right margins has thin 2" strips of aged tape. Page is Fine overall, while art areas remain bold, clean and Exc. This page of original art has been in a private collection since our consignor acquired it in 1975. After nearly 40 years off the market, we are thrilled to be able to offer this stunning piece to the collecting community. (M - $5000 to $10000)
