Item Description
This exceptional pair of painted composition displays are amazing in every way - in size, design, rarity and condition. Each is two-dimensional w/all original wood bracing/framework attached to reverse along w/the motors and electric cords. Mickey is 32x40" while Minnie is 30x36". c. 1935 by Old King Cole Inc., the premiere manufacturer of Disney store displays. Included in our photos (for reference only) is the two-page spread for this company that appears in the 1935 Mickey Mouse Merchandise retailer's catalog. In this ad, this very same pair of displays are prominently featured. Attached to the reverse of each is a 2.5" dia. original Kay Kamen "seal" sticker. Lower left of Mickey display also marked "© By Special Permission Of Walt Disney Enterprises." Both work perfectly. Mickey's outstretched arm moves up and down while Minnie's upper body moves back and forth as if doing a curtsey. Each has several small scattered paint flakes, all minor and in no way distracting. This includes 1" streak on one of Mickey's ears and .25" scuff on pants. Minnie has small .25-.5" flakes on face, upper body, shoes and tail. All are complete and original as produced, w/no restoration or repair work of any kind. Both are Exc. The reason these remain as nice as they are, is that they were stored in the basement of a prominent New England department store, covered and undisturbed for more than 60 years before being obtained by our consignor. All displays by this company are rare, these are two of the more exceptional examples produced. In our last auction, we offered a totally different non-mechanical Mickey Mouse Old King Cole display which sold for $4,933. While that display was certainly impressive, it pales in comparison to this incredible pair. A must-have for any serious collector of Disneyana and what could easily become the focal point of your collection. One of the most incredible pieces of Disneyana we've offered in our 46 years.
