Item Description
5x6" German porcelain ashtray w/swastika design and "Camp Siegfried" name as well as "AV" letters at base of swastika design. "AV" stands for Amerikadeutscher Volksbund, another name for the German-American Bund, a pro-Nazi American organization devoted to promoting a favorable view of Nazi Germany. Camp Siegfried was a summer camp which taught Nazi ideology and was located in Yaphank, NY. It was owned and operated by the German-American Bund 1935-1941 and was one of many such camps in the US during the 1930s. Camp Siegfried was shut down by the US government when Germany declared war on the United States. It had been protected by the First Amendment until that time, when it became illegal for US citizens to swear allegiance to Germany. Underside of ashtray has Graf von Henneberg "JLMENAU" maker's mark that was used between 1934 and 1949. Ashtray has some scattered wear to blue paint accent at cigarette rests but is o/w Exc.
