Item Description
Vintage 5x6.75" glossy photo c. early 1940s shows 21 member team in uniforms with partially filled stadium in the background. Standing in back row near center is Martin Dihigo. Noticeable wear and aging w/crease running vertically at left margin, other margin creases, 1" area of staining at top left. Pair of 1/16" insect holes in/around bottom center area only noticeable when viewed closely. Overall Good but photo remains glossy with sharp image and Dihigo clearly stands out among his teammates. Dihigo (1906-1971) excelled as a pitcher and second baseman. He began his professional career in the winter of 1922-23 at the age of 16 and had his first summer in US baseball in 1923 as a first baseman for the Negro League's Cuban Stars (East). He played in the Negro Leagues from 1923 through 1936 and again briefly in 1945. Over the course of his career he played all nine positions. He lead the Negro Leagues in home runs in 1926 and 1935. He is the only player inducted into the Cuban, Mexican and National Baseball Hall of Fame. From the Richard Merkin Collection and come with Hake's COA.
