Item Description
3.25x5.5" glossy showing 14 member Venezuelan team in uniform with members in front row wearing gloves and bat boy at lower left holding bat. Manager Arturo Lopez is wearing suit at right. This is the only photo known to us showing Martin Dihigo and Josh Gibson together, and the only to feature Gibson in this uniform. Team members also include Tetelo Vargas, Rap Dixon and Luis Aparicio Sr. Reverse side has typewritten text listing team members by first or last name along with positions. Text at bottom loosely translates to "Winner Of The Series Against Venezuelan And Dominican In The Municipal Sports". Photo has handling creases, front has very faint number impression above players heads (barely visible even in reflected light) matching number on reverse that lists their names. Overall Good/VG. A bold, sharp and distinct image. Dihigo was the star pitcher on a team sponsored by the dictator of Venezuela's son. Vargas was the best pitcher at that time. The team traveled to Cuba and played against Cuban All-Star teams. They imported Johnny Mize for one of the series. When Mize had to report to spring training, they replaced him with Josh Gibson. Incredibly historic. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
