6-5/8x8-5/8" glossy showing Johnson behind wheel of open air car. Back has pencil caption and ink stamp of photographer L. Van Oeyen and captions are likely written by him. Caption reads "Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson Sitting In Car In Which He Raced Barney Oldfield For A Wager At Sheepshead Bay, Long Island. 1914". Photo has a few lt. handling creases just visible in reflected light. VF. Photographer Louis Van Oeyen (1865-1946) was the first newspaper staff photographer in Cleveland. The noted photographer covered politics, disaster, crime, scandal and sports but his greatest love was baseball. He was named the official photographer of the American League of Professional Baseball in 1908, and then for the World Series until 1922. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
