Item Description
This is one of the most striking objects we've ever offered. It was the creation of one "Margaret G. Murphy" whose name is engraved on the interior which is apparently finished in a 14K gold wash. She lived in "New York City" and engraving includes her first address on 122nd St. but house and street number are neatly lined out by a jeweler with engraved new house and street number placed above the old. The movable bar to hold cigarettes in place in marked "Sterling." Case could also be used to hold business cards. Case interior has tiny circles where the exterior charms have tiny pins welded to their reverses and then fitted into these tiny 1/32" drilled holes. The amount of time a jeweler spent mounting 30 charms on one side and 24 on the other is unknown but certainly required hours and hours. Only one sailboat charm is partially loose; the mast can move about 1/8" to one side but the base remains firmly attached. The only additional age is small loss of red enamel paint from a "Danger" arrow symbol and a speck of red enamel off the heart & key charm. Vast majority of charms are gold, likely 14K. A star and a jockey hat are platinum both accented by small diamonds. A four-leaf clover with horseshoe also has diamond accent. The two character charms in fabulous enamel colors on gold are full figure Betty Boop and Charlie McCarthy portrait. Two unique pieces are an envelope designed with a tiny enamel stamp and engraved on the front "Margaret" with an interior plate that swivels out with engraving "Keep Smiling." Second is a wallet with tiny pearl at clasp with upper hinge flap that opens to reveal a rectangular gold plate, fully removable, with "Margaret G. Murphy" engraved on one side and her "Soc Sec" number on opposite side. Other personal pieces are separate "MM" initials and fancy "MM" initials in a circle. Other pieces, some accented by enamel include: Princeton "P" pennant. "Navy" pennant, five U.S. or foreign coins (most recent a 1946 Roosevelt dime), "R" for "Repeal 18th Amendment" date "1935", and "USN" (navy) emblem. Other pieces are: horse, swordfish, palm tree, horseshoe, lotus flower, camel, heart, riding stirrup, bluebirds, owl, penguin, baby chick, Puss n' Boots, Dachshund, Scottie in plaid blanket, pig, enamel sailor, cross with tiny pearls and more. A fascinating creation with significant intrinsic value.
